IVF Glossary

Simple and clear explanations for all confusing medical terms.

IVF (In Vitro Fertilization)

The process of fertilizing eggs with sperm in a laboratory setting outside the body.

ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection)

A procedure where a single healthy sperm is injected directly into an egg. Used mainly for male infertility.

OPU (Oocyte Pick-Up)

The egg retrieval procedure. Mature eggs are collected from the ovaries under ultrasound guidance.

PGT (Preimplantation Genetic Testing)

Genetic screening of embryos for chromosomal abnormalities or genetic diseases before transfer.

Blastocyst

An embryo that has developed for 5 to 6 days after fertilization, consisting of about 100-200 cells.

AMH (Anti-Müllerian Hormone)

A blood test measuring ovarian reserve. Indicates the quantity of eggs remaining in a woman's ovaries.

FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone)

A hormone secreted by the pituitary gland that stimulates follicle growth in the ovaries.

LH (Luteinizing Hormone)

The hormone that triggers ovulation (release of the egg).

ET (Embryo Transfer)

The procedure of placing the developed embryo into the uterus using a thin catheter.

IUI (Intrauterine Insemination)

A procedure where washed and prepared sperm is placed directly into the uterus around the time of ovulation.

Cryopreservation (Freezing)

The process of freezing eggs, sperm, or embryos at ultra-low temperatures (-196°C) for future use.

Embryo Grading

A scoring system based on the number of cells, shape, and fragmentation to assess embryo quality (e.g., 5AA, 4AB).

Endometrium

The inner lining of the uterus where the embryo implants. Its thickness is crucial for a successful transfer.

Estradiol (E2)

A form of estrogen produced by the ovaries. It promotes follicle growth and thickening of the uterine lining.

Progesterone

A hormone vital for maintaining pregnancy. It prepares the endometrium for embryo implantation.

Beta hCG

The pregnancy hormone. It starts being produced after the embryo implants. A blood test confirms pregnancy.

Hysteroscopy

A procedure to examine the inside of the uterus using a lighted camera. Used to diagnose and treat polyps, fibroids, or adhesions.

Laparoscopy

A surgical procedure to examine the abdominal organs using a camera through small incisions. Also known as 'keyhole surgery'.

PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome)

A hormonal disorder causing enlarged ovaries with small cysts, often leading to irregular periods and ovulation issues.

Endometriosis

A condition where tissue similar to the lining inside the uterus grows outside it, causing pain and potential infertility.

Azoospermia

A condition where there is no sperm in the semen. Sperm retrieval techniques like TESE may be needed.

TESE / Micro-TESE

A surgical procedure to retrieve sperm directly from the testes, often performed under a microscope for men with azoospermia.
